Bruce Allen: Gettleman ‘ does not have any clue ‘ about our draft board

Following the 2019 NFL Draft, General Manager Dave Gettleman, embattled New York Giants, spent days explaining why he took Daniel Jones to quarterback with the overall pick No. 6.Gettleman explained the selection at one point in the circular defense by saying he was certain that two teams would have snatched Jones before the QB dropped to No. 17.

The Washington Redskins have been reported as one of those teams that would have taken Jones since that quote surfaced. Washington was sitting at No. 15 selection.

Appearing on Total Access Tuesday night at NFL Network, Redskins Team President Bruce Allen told Lindsay Rhodes host that the notion was hogwash.

“We chose the player we wanted to pick,” said Allen of Dwayne Haskins. “I’m nearly positive Dave has no clue what our board draft would be. I don’t know which board draft he knows, but he doesn’t know our board.”

Preliminary reports indicated that the Redskins looked at Haskins and planned to move up in the draft to get him.Allen confirmed to Rhodes that they were planning to trade to secure the quarterback of the Ohio State, but was able to sit tightly after Jones was taken by the Giants.

“Well there were still a lot of good players in football and they started going, bang, bang, bang,” Allen said of watching Haskins fall at No. 6 after Big Blue’s QB choice.”And we felt comfortable that Dwayne would come to us, but we were excited when it happened.”

Dwayne Haskins will compete in a position room littered with veterans for the Redskins starting quarterback work.

“For any quarterback we’re going to bring in, it’s a great situation and Dwayne is excited about it. Patrick Mahomes, our reigning NFL MVP, learned from Alex Smith’s hip.And Alex will be part of our program — we still don’t know from the doctors if he’ll be playing and what time in the season, but he’ll be part of our program. And (Dwayne Haskins) will be able to learn from Case Keenum and Colt McCoy, and then our coaching staff will be filled with old quarterbacks. We’ve got the great Doug Williams in the building, so it’ll be a great learning experience for (Dwayne Haskins) and we want to make sure he’s got a great career.

Unlike Mahomes, there’s no chance that Haskins will sit a year. With Smith’s career at risk, as he did with Mahomes, he is likely to tutor Haskins more like a coach than a starter. Another surgery is coming out of McCoy. Keenum had previously beaten younger quarters, but given the high standing of Haskins within the Redskins organization, It would be amazing if Haskins didn’t win the job early in the 2019 season, and the pressure to play first-round signal callers.
