John Albert Elway swung and missed quarterbacks again and again and again and again.
However, like any good hitter, the Denver Broncos’ GM will continue to swing until he finally connects. In the second round, his latest stroke moved up to snag Drew Lock, the top-graded signal caller on his draft board.
“You’re always trying to find a response to the quarterback position,” Elway told 9News Denver’s Mike Klis. “You can’t wait until you have one. We’ve been working on it and you’re always working on it.
“We feel really good about what we have in Drew and his capacity over the next couple of years to continue to grow and make some progress. Hopefully, he’s the guy for the future.”
We’re chiding John Elway for his misses on Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch likes, and tossing money at Case Keenum, but he’s absolutely right that he can’t stop taking swings to find a quarterback.
As Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff famously said, the search “consumes you” until you find your franchise quarterback.
The search for the eventual heir of Peyton Manning has definitely consumed Elway, and his misses are beginning to put dings in his previously pristine armor suit.
The plan is for the Broncos to ride Joe Flacco next season right now, and perhaps in 2020 if all goes well, then hand over the baton to Lock.
If that plan crashes and burns with Lock, like the previous one with Lynch, Elway will take another swing — assuming he’s still the man in charge.
