The Orlando Magic continues to take a big-picture perspective with Mo Bamba as he fights his way home from a knee injury.

The second-year player will not play for the rest of the NBA Summer League as the squad retains its conservative attitude to his return from the stress fracture that compelled him to miss last season’s final three months.

“It’s just mistaken on the side of caution,” Magic basketball operations president Jeff Weltman told the Sentinel in a telephone interview on Tuesday. “It shouldn’t affect anything, and obviously Summer League isn’t the objective, it’s just a location to get reps, so we just wanted Mo to keep having a nice summer and make sure we train him correctly, [ and ] placed him in a situation to succeed.”

Bamba played 15 minutes – and scored 15 points – against the Spurs in the Summer League opener on Friday, and then experienced some general sorrow as expected. Bamba hadn’t performed in a match since January 31, just before his left tibia was diagnosed with a stress fracture. The injury compelled him to leave the regular season’s final 29 matches as well as the first-round playoff series of the Magic against the Raptors.
